Nestled in the rolling hills of Puglia, Italy, lies the charming town of Locorotondo. This hidden gem exudes a timeless beauty that captures the essence of southern Italy. A town, still inhabited by locals, where it appears as though time has paused. Its hills are dotted with charming whitewashed houses, cobbled streets and ancient olive groves. A place where the food is divine, the people are warm and friendly, and the scenery is breathtaking.
Its name, which translates to “Round Place,” refers to the circular shape of the town, which has been perfectly preserved throughout the centuries. The unique urban plan and its rich cultural heritage, make Locorotondo a must-visit destination for those seeking a genuine slice of Italy. From sipping a refreshing glass of local wine or Aperol Spritz, to admiring the stunning panoramic views and charming streets, to discovering the traditions and cuisine of the region, Locorotondo promises a journey back in time, filled with unforgettable experiences.
Most people only make a quick stop in this quaint little gem on their way to the bigger neighboring towns of Martina Franca or Ostuni. But I decided to spend two nights here, so I could make the most of my stay and truly let its charms embrace me. Here are the best things to do in Locorotondo!

Stay in a trullo
For a truly authentic experience, consider staying in one of Locorotondo’s traditional trulli houses. These charming, cone-shaped houses made of limestone offer a unique and comfortable accommodation option. Locorotondo is famous for its well-preserved trulli, many of which have been converted into cozy holiday homes for tourists. Staying in a trullo offers a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage and provides a comfortable and tranquil base for exploring the surrounding area. The homes are typically decorated with traditional elements such as whitewashed walls, arched doorways, and stone floors, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
I stayed at Marinella Suite Home, just outside the old city center. My rather spacious room owned a comfortable bed and small bathroom. A big kitchen and living area served as shared quarters. Outside I could enjoy the pool. It is no longer bookable, but there are plenty of options to book in Locorotondo!
Stroll around Locorotondo’s Centro Storico
Walking around Locorotondo is like taking a step back in time. The charming well-preserved whitewashed buildings with their round arches and the town’s stairways transport you to a bygone era. The streets are narrow and winding, with white cobblestones and stone paving. The houses in the historic center are typically two or three stories tall and are decorated with traditional features such as arched doorways and windows, wooden shutters, and balconies.
As you stroll through the town in the morning, you can’t help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over you. Time seems to stand still here, and the pace of life is slower, more relaxed. You’ll see locals going about their daily business, chatting with neighbors and friends, and stopping to admire the stunning views over the surrounding countryside. While wandering through the narrow alleys I encountered nonnas hanging their laundry or cleaning their house. I even met with a nun who was filling her buckets at a public water fountain.
The locals make sure their plants keep blooming and their cacti keep being in place. Locorotondo is a clean and well maintained town! The scents of fresh laundry and fragrant aromas of local cuisine kept seducing my nose. The terraces of cafes and restaurants are filled with people soaking up the sun and enjoying their meals and drinks.
As you explore the old town, you’ll come across charming local shops selling handmade crafts and artisanal goods, as well as small markets offering fresh produce and local specialties. You’ll also have the chance to experience the town’s rich cultural heritage, with stunning churches and historic buildings like the Palazzo Morelli waiting to be discovered at every turn.
The town is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and rolling hills, creating a picture-perfect setting. So make sure to walk the outside borders of Locorotondo as well! Whether you’re here for the day or staying longer, a walk around the old town is definitely one of the best things to do in Locorotondo. Its timeless beauty and relaxed atmosphere will stay with you long after you’ve left.
Taste the local cuisine
Puglia is renowned for its delicious cuisine, and Locorotondo is no exception. Try the traditional dish of orecchiette pasta with a flavorful tomato sauce, or indulge in a plate of fresh seafood. Rumor has it you can taste the best pizza of the region at Pizzeria Casa Pinto. I can confirm it did not disappoint! Also Ai Tre Santi is worth a visit! The restaurant offers a wide variety of delicious, authentic Italian dishes made with the freshest ingredients. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Whether you’re in the mood for pasta or something more unique, I am sure you will find something you will love.
Enjoy an aperitivo with the best view in Locorotondo
Aperitivo will always be one of my favorite things to do in Italy, also in Locorotondo! Arriving at the southside of the Via Nardelli you are greeted by cheerful chatter echoing from the bars located here. Take a seat at a small table outside, with the white-washed buildings on one side and a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and Martina Franca in the far distance on the other side. It is the ideal décor to enjoy an aperitivo in the warm afternoon sun.
As you peruse the menu, your mouth begins to water at the thought of the delicious treats in store. A cold glass of Aperol Spritz is placed in front of you, and you take a sip, savoring the tangy, fruity and bitter flavor. Then you indulge in some salty snacks, mozzarella and cured meats, each bite bursting with flavor… and you know you have come to the right place…
Walk through the olive groves
Locorotondo, like the rest of Puglia, is famous for its olive groves. Take a walk through the olive groves and vineyards and admire the stunning views of the countryside and the city from another perspective. The best view you will get, when you walk down the stairs of the Via dei Templari that start at the Via Nardelli.
Explore Locorotondo by night
Walking through the quiet streets of Locorotondo at night is like stepping into a dream. The whitewashed buildings, glowing in the moonlight, form a maze of alleys that invite exploration. As you enter the old town, the sound of crickets and the occasional barking dog are the only noises to accompany you. The occasional streetlamp casts a warm, golden light, creating pockets of illumination that contrast with the deep shadows of the surrounding buildings.
Approaching the heart of the town, near the Chiesa Maria Santissima Annunziata, the chatter of locals and the clinking of glasses blend with the sound of televisions echoing from open windows. Creating a symphony of sound that seems to defy the stillness of the night. Teenagers sitting in doorways drinking beers together, small children running and laughing through the streets and couples making their evening stroll with a gelato in their hands suddenly take you back to reality.
As you continue your walk, the walls of the buildings close in, and the alleys narrow again, leading you back to the edge of the old town. The air grows cooler, and the sounds fade away, replaced by the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. And then, after going down the stairways, suddenly, you emerge back onto a main street, the stars shining bright overhead, and the world seems to snap back into focus. The spell is broken, but the memories of your nighttime wanderings through Locorotondo will linger for a lifetime.
In conclusion, Locorotondo is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. With its charming old town, beautiful countryside, and delicious cuisine, it is the perfect destination for a relaxing and rejuvenating getaway. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a cultural adventure, or a foodie experience, Locorotondo has something to offer everyone.
