Fornalutx is one of the most beautiful small towns you must visit on the Spanish island Mallorca. Hidden in the mountains, only 469 inhabitants experience its beauty daily. It wasn’t mentioned in my travel guide, so I discovered its existence during my stay at Soller and I’m so glad I did.
Fornalutx: a place you must visit
How to get there
I reached Fornalutx by taking the mini bus L212 from Port de Soller (Avenida 11 de maio). Make sure to depart early in the morning so you can be sure to have a seat on the bus. Otherwise you have to wait and take the next one 2 hours later. (or take a taxi which is more expensive) If you’re coming from Palma you can take the train to Soller and take the mini bus from there (if it’s not full yet).
How to explore
Foot power is the only way to explore this charming little town. After arriving walk up the Carrer Sol and be amazed. You’ll pass small houses with facades made of rough stone, giving the town a rustic feel. The green shutters match the many flowerpots containing plants and colorful flowers that decorate each street. A lot of streets are actually stairs leading you to more narrow streets. Fornalutx is a silent pieceful town. There’s only one driveable street. The only sounds I heard was local music coming out of the open windows decorated with flowers, birds singing and the meow of a local cat.
The centre of Fornalutx is the Plaça d’Espanya, a very small main square recognizable by the clock on the side of the village’s church. It contains a few cafés and a general store.
When you reach the upper part of the town, you’ll pass fields with orange trees and paths surrounded by cactuses. From there you get to see the Alfabia Mountains decorated with trees growing lemons, oranges and olives.
I loved the vibe of this little hidden treasure and advise you to give it a visit when you’re in Mallorca!
