Where to find the most beautiful streets and mews in London? London is huge and has many different quarters, each with their own style of architecture. This article will show you some of the prettiest streets and mews in London including a map and information about how to get there! And the best thing is; most of them are off the beaten path!
The most beautiful streets and mews in London
I made it my mission to explore the prettiest streets and mews in London during my last visit. After doing a lot of research I had found what I was looking for and created an itinerary! I didn’t want to stroll around London from one famous monument to another again. I wanted to get to know the city better by exploring some neighborhoods I hadn’t visited before. And I succeeded! These are the most beautiful streets I encountered!
St Lukes Mews – Notting Hill
How to get there? Central Line, Circle Line or District Line to Notting Hill Gate / Circle Line or Hammersmith & City to Westbourne Park
The St Lukes Mews became famous after the pink house was used as Juliet’s house in the scene where Mark declares his love to her in Love Actually. This little street contains a lot of small cute houses. To my surprise I was the only one there, so I had enough time to take photos and enjoy the quietness.
Lancaster Road – Notting Hill
How to get there? Central Line, Circle Line or District Line to Notting Hill Gate / Circle Line or Hammersmith & City to Westbourne Park
This street is right behind the corner of the St Lukes Mews and houses some bright colored mansions. It is less crowded than Denbigh Terrace (which is the more popular pastel colored side street of Portobello Road Market), but don’t expect there to be on your own, unless you go early.
Portobello Road Market – Notting Hill
How to get there? Central Line, Circle Line or District Line to Notting Hill Gate
This is one of the most famous streets of London. During the day you will find a market here, where they sell souvenirs and all kinds of stuff. The first part of the street coming from Notting Hill Gate, has some cute, colored houses. The rest of the street exists of shops and bars and also has some very colorful parts.
Conduit Mews – Paddington
How to get there? Bakerloo Line, Hammersmith & City Line, Circle Line or District Line to Paddington
The Conduit Mews are hidden in the bustling Paddington area. Just a few steps away from Paddington Station you will find this narrow cobblestone street decorated by cute little colored houses. They once were stables and coach-houses for stable-boys and other staff and were part of bigger houses of the rich.
Chalcot Crescent – Primrose Hill
How to get there? Northern Line to Chalk Farm
Another street that became famous because of a movie; Paddington. The blue house of the Browns, the family that adopted Paddington the bear, is situated in this lovely pastel colored street. I expected it to be more crowded, but again I was the only one there in the middle of the day!
Chalcot Square – Primrose Hill
How to get there? Northern Line to Chalk Farm
I really loved strolling around Chalcot Square and Chalcot Road. The square is surrounded by pastel colored mansions. All I could do was dreaming about what it would be like to live here! In the middle of the square is a small park.
Bywater Street – Chelsea
How to get there? Circle Line or District Line to Sloane Square
This little side street of King’s Road is another cute gem that I probably would’ve missed if I hadn’t known it was there! King’s Road is a busy shopping street and this side street the exact opposite! Bywater Street is a quiet colorful narrow cobblestone street with cute doorways and the people living there were all so friendly! I always expect people to look a little weird at me while taking photos. But these people all smiled at me!
Sloane Gardens – Belgravia
How to get there? Circle Line or District Line to Sloane Square
Of course a street can also be beautiful without pastel colored houses! While walking from Chelsea to Belgravia I passed this street lined with red brick houses decorated with white framed windows. I thought it was so pretty! A lot of these mansions seemed to be hotels, so maybe next time I try to stay here, because I really want to know what the interior of such a house looks like!
Onslow Square – Chelsea
How to get there? Circle Line, District Line or Piccadilly Line to South Kensington
This square is surrounded by elegant white mansions with pillared portals. It looked very clean and posh.
