I’ve spent one day in Bovec during my road trip at the Julian Alps in Slovenia. Bovec is known for its many activities like rafting, ziplining and canyoning, but I wasn’t able to do any of those things due to the bad weather, so I decided to explore waterfalls and hike the Soca trail. I stayed two nights at an apartment in Kal-Koritnica, a tiny town, five minutes driving from the Bovec city center and ten minutes from the Soca trail. It was the ideal location to explore the sights I had planned to see. I arrived there in the evening so I had dinner at the local restaurant and the next day I started exploring early in the morning so I could do all the things I wanted to do.
One day in Bovec, Slovenia: what to do?
Slap Virje
To reach the Virje waterfall you drive to the little town Pluzna. From there you can walk to the Virje waterfall. During the Summer you can take a swim here, but since it had been raining constantly the previous 6 days I wasn’t even able to get to the foot of the waterfall. The splash was too heavy and I got a soaked pants within 15 seconds! I don’t have any pics from the waterfall. I only have the one in this post from up above. But you can check out the vlog of that day to discover the “waterfall situation” :-). (watch below)
I also tried to reach the Gljun source, but the path wasn’t indicated very well, so I got lost (thanks to my favorite app I discovered this pretty quickly, more on that later in a different article) and returned. I think the right path next to the river got flooded.
Slap Boka
This 106 m high waterfall is easy to reach. You can park at the bridge over the Boka river. From there it only takes a short walk to the viewing platform. When the weather is good you can follow the river to the waterfall.
Soca Trail
After lunch I drove to the Soca canyon. I parked my car somewhere near Kamp Soca. From there I could see the signs to the Soca trail. It is a wonderful hike along the blue green Soca river and its canyons. At times you walk right beside the canyon which offers very impressive sights on the fast streaming river. You’ll cross hanging bridges and at times you can jump from rock to rock, so you’re actually standing in the river!
Did you stay at Bovec? What did you do there? Please share in the comments! I’m sure I ‘ll return one day to enjoy it with (hopefully) better weather!
