One day in Ljubljana is just enough to explore the city’s main sights. Even though it’s Slovenia’s capital city, it’s rather small and still one of those undiscovered charming towns in Europe, not yet overrun by tourists. As soon as I arrived and walked through the cosy colorful streets, Ljubljana reminded me of Prague with its lovely bridges, colorful façades and tiny streets. Thanks to the Ljubljana river flowing through the city, the restaurants and bars along the riverside give the city an extra special vibe. Wandering through the streets made me feel as if I was teleported to another century or into a fairytale. What should you surely do on your one day visit to Ljubljana? Let me show you!
One day in Ljubljana
The bridges
Ljubljana has a lot of cute bridges. The most famous place of Ljubljana is the Triple Bridge or the Three Bridges. The view of these bridges with the pink Franciscan church and the Preseren Square (Presernov Trg) in the background makes it one of the most beautiful sights in town. Other known bridges worth visiting are the Dragon Bridge and Mesarski Most with the hanging locks.
Robba fountain
This fountain can be found at the lovely Mestni trg. It reminded me of the fountains in Rome.
Ljubljana Cathedral
The cathedral is probably the most notable building of Ljubljana (besides the pink Franciscan church) with its yellow facade and green dome. Don’t hesitate to take a look inside.
Wander around the old town
The old town isn’t big at all. It starts from the Dragon Bridge to the Levstikov trg and on the other side of the river it’s the area around the Preseren Square. It’s easy to do in just two hours.
The riverside
Along the riverside you’ll find charming houses, restaurants and bars so it’s definitely fun to explore.
Metelkova Mesto
When you’re one day in Ljubljana, you should go a little further outside the old town center, where you can find Metelkova Mesto. This is an autonomous social centre with art galleries and bars. What makes this place so special is its graffiti and colorful art you can find on every building and street. Often a bit weird if you ask me, but worth taking a look at. At night it becomes a meeting place for the younger.
Ljubljana Castle
The castle itself isn’t very spectacular, but it’s always nice to get a view of the city from up above.
Lolita Cakes
If you adore sweets like me you should really go to Lolita and try out their cakes and pastries! They have so many different options, which makes it hard to choose. Even the people working there were sweet. 🙂
Vigo Icecream
This was a tip I got from a local and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Vigo has many flavours of icecream, even a variety of chocolate ones!
Ljubljana by night
If you can, please spend one night at Ljubljana. Experiencing the city by night will make you love this gem even more!

Yes, I really loved it! I would love to see it in the Sunshine though. Must be even better when all the terraces are filled with smiling thirsty people and a blue sky 🙂
