Driving a quad at the Dominican Republic made me feel like a kid. Remember those little automatic motorcycles in which you had to insert money to drive around at fairs? It felt like that, but less easy. On the concrete roads it was a piece of cake and I went really fast, but the real adventure started as soon as I entered the jungle and drove on the sandy rocky pathways. Rocks, holes, bumps and tree roots make it difficult to control the handlebar. Arm muscles sure are an advantage here!
While driving to the first stop “Boca del Diablo”, near Samana, you pass small houses, often shacks made of wood, pineapple plantations and palm trees and other tropical vegetation. When you arrive near Bocal del Diablo it’s like you’re in the middle of Jurassic Park (but without the dinosaurs). Nature here is splendid and overwhelming with the rocks, caves and vegetation. Boca del Diablo means Mouth of the Devil and it’s a blowhole where waves rush up and blast out of a hole in the rocks.
After experiencing the forces of nature here, you’ll continue your way to Playa Rincon. This beach is paradise at its best. White sand, blue clear water, palm trees as far as the eye can see… I could sit here for hours staring at the waves. Lunch was served here, which was one of the most delicious chickens I ever ate. Where the Caño Frio meets the sea you can meet the locals who have small beach parties here or family barbecues. All with their big speakers in the back of their trucks playing merengue music.
When visiting the Dominican Republic make sure you get off that beach chair and explore. Because this country has some amazing places to offer!
