Even though it does not snow that often in Belgium, Winter Wonderland does exist in the land of beer, chocolate and fries. When it does, it is most likely at the High Fens. In this region near the German border, you find Belgium’s highest hilltops. It is also one of the wettest areas of Belgium. So when the temperature drops below 0°C and precipitation is predicted, you can be sure snow will fall at the High Fens and turn this already magnificent landscape into a dreamy Winter Wonderland.
DISCLAIMER: Please keep in mind the Covid-19 pandemic isn’t over yet and that it is not wise to go to the High Fens in the weekend, when apparently everyone wants to go there. There are a lot of places with snow at the moment in the Belgian Ardennes. Try to find another place where you can enjoy an actual quite snow hike without the crowds. You’ll appreciate and enjoy it more! In my hidden gems in Belgium post you can find a good example, but there are far more places you can go to!
Where to find the perfect snow in Belgium?
Where to go for the biggest chance of snow?
The High Fens have an average of 43 days of snow per year. Most likely you’ll find the biggest amount of snow on Belgium’s highest hills; the Signal de Botrange (694m) Mont Rigi (681m) and Baraque Michel (674m). When these hills are covered with snow, you can be sure you’ll find the most magical Winter Wonderland with snow covered pines & deciduous trees, wooden deck paths and fantastic landscapes!
How to experience snow in Belgium at its best?
The best way to experience snow in Belgium is to hike! I did the hike at the Signal de Botrange that is indicated with the blue rectangle. It is only 8.7 km, but it will guide you along the most magnificent landscapes and it offers a lot of variety! You’ll walk through pine forests and the wooden deck paths lead you through the bogs and fens.
The hike starts officially at the Signal de Botrange, but you can also begin at Baraque de Michel. Both places have a huge parking lot. Do the hike counterclockwise for the best views.
I advise to go during the week, since during the weekend and holidays the High Fens get quite crowded.
How to know if there is really snow?
Just check the webcam of Mont Rigi and the Botrange. That way you’ll get a look of the current weather situation and you are sure there is snow or not!
What to wear when experiencing snow in Belgium?
The most important, to keep your snow in Belgium experience fun, is to stay warm and dry! I recommend wearing a wool sweater, a warm waterproof jacket and waterproof shoes! I wore my Fjällräven Kiruna Padded Parka W, which I absolutely love, because despite it is compact and light to wear, it kept me very warm!
I do not have real hiking shoes, but I did all the hikes on this blog with my Timberland boots! Even the ones in Iceland when I was walking through rivers to reach waterfalls! My feet have always stayed dry!
