Where to find blossoms and flowers during spring in Belgium? A question I asked myself multiple times in the past! I absolutely love the magic of spring, since nature finally comes back alive and starts to color the world again with its green leaves and colorful flowers. The days become longer and warmer. The feeling of the warmth of the first spring sun on your skin is absolute bliss after a long cold winter!
Ever since the pandemic and lockdowns started, I became more aware of my surroundings. I explored more of my own country, Belgium, and even started chasing flowers and blossoms! After some research and local trips, I was able to create a list of the most amazingly beautiful places to visit during spring. You would be surprised what you can find here! For instance, did you know that we have tulip fields in Belgium?
Looking for blossoms or flowers can be tricky, since it often depends on the weather. Which can be very unpredictable and unstable in Belgium, especially during springtime! One day it is 25°C and sunny, the next day the temperature drops and it snows! So I added the blooming periods of the flowers and blossoms to make it easier for you! But be aware that these can shift a little each year, since the weather has a big impact!
Ready for your spring explorations in Belgium? Here it goes!

DISCLAIMER: Please never step on flowers and stay on the paths. Most wild flowers are extremely sensitive. Once you step on them, they are dead and they will never return again. If you are visiting tulip fields (or any other flower field), be respectful and don’t pick the flowers or step on them. These are someone’s property and livelihood! If it looks as if I am standing on flowers, it is either me standing on a piece of ground with no flowers or taken from an angle so it looks as if I am standing in the middle of the flowers. There can also be a little Photoshop being involved at times. Never enter private property!

1. Magnolia tree at Te Boelaerpark – Borgerhout
At Te Boelaerpark in Borgerhout you can find the most magical heart shaped Magnolia tree. It is said to be over 100 years old and it is known to be one of the most beautiful in Antwerp. This spring the city even organizes a photo competition! Those with the most beautiful photo can win a flower bouquet of a local flower shop.
I discovered this tree by accident while passing the park by car. The bright pink caught my eye, but it went too fast to get a proper good look. So I decided to return the next morning by bike. It certainly did not disappoint; the Magnolia tree looked magnificent from up close! I was there at sunrise so I had the place all to myself. But after 30 minutes other photographers started to appear. The best time to visit is definitely the early morning. Because by day this park gets swarmed with families and little kids playing on the surrounding lawns.
Location: Karel de Preterlei 2140 Antwerp
Blooming period: mid March – beginning of April, keep in mind Magnolias don’t last long once they bloom
2. Spring galore at Rivierenhof – Deurne
I already mentioned this park on the blog since it is the most beautiful park of Antwerp and one of my favorites. During springtime this park offers a digital Magnolia route to explore the magnificent Magnolia trees in the park. Even though a lot of these trees are still young and thus quite small, I also found some bigger trees spread around the park. I even found one with a low hanging branch to sit on!
You will find other blossoms and flowers as well here, like cherry blossoms and daffodils. So this park is definitely a must visit if you want to experience spring in Belgium.
Location: Turnhoutsebaan 246, 2100 Antwerp
Blooming period: mid March – mid April

3. Spring flowers at Uilenbos – Hove
The Uilenbos is one of the many woods in Flanders that is protected by Natuurpunt (an independent volunteer association that ensures the protection of vulnerable and endangered nature) and a must visit during spring in Belgium. It is part of the landscape park De Grote Boshoek and is known for its wide variety of spring flowers. During the early spring you will find wood anemones, celandine, marsh marigold, snowdrops and many more! If you are lucky you can also spot deer!
I found it while looking on the website of Natuurpunt for spring flowers. I was so excited after finding out there was a forest this closeby with so many different flowers! After I found out, I immediately jumped on my bike after work. I arrived around 17.30 and did not meet a single soul while I was walking and photographing there!
Location: Lintsesteenweg, 2540 Hove
Blooming period: mid March – May
4. Buttercups & more at Zevenbergenbos – Ranst
Another forest I have already visited several times is the Zevenbergenbos in Ranst. This forest is also known for its spring flowers such as wood anemones, slender primroses and wild garlic. Last year I visited the forest on the first day of May, while it was decorated with wild garlic. This year I returned to look for other spring flowers like wood anemones. In May the meadows are covered with an excessive amount buttercups! To make it even more cute; during that period you will find Galloway cows grazing in these fields.
Location: near Zevenbergen Castle at Kasteeldreef, 2520 Ranst
Blooming period: mid March – May
5. The perfect Blossom Cycle Route – Ranst
Since 2017 “Cycling Between Blossoms and Fruit” was introduced in Ranst. It’s a beautiful cycling route of about 41.5 km based on the existing bike junctions. It is a beautiful route that takes you along a lot of orchards, meadows with flowers, farmer’s fields, Zevenbergenbos and even the castle Bossenstein!
In Ranst you can find a lot of beautiful orchards and the best thing is you can support the farmers by buying their local products en route! A good example is Notelteirs Pomdamoor. They have installed a small shop ‘t Stalleke where they sell the most delicious selfmade products. You can choose from apple juice, cider, beer and a lot of mixed juices. But also apple cider vinegar, apple gin, pancake syrup,.. It is the perfect place to buy something yummie to add to your picnic basket on the way! If you can’t wait to try them, you can install your picnic at their picnic table about 15m from the shop. But they also sell gift packages, so you can buy some souvenirs for your family and friends as well! I can definitely recommend the apple cider and the apple mojito juice!
If you can’t make it there, but you would love to try these delicious treats; no worries. You can also order them online here! I definitely recommend biking or hiking here because it is a beautiful region!

6. Blossoms and flowers at Hof Ter Linden – Edegem
Another favorite of mine to experience spring is Hof Ter Linden. This park is situated in the town I grew up in; Edegem. When I was little this was a private castle domain. But since a few years it became a public park. What I love about this place is that it is not 100% landscaped. There are areas that look more like a forest instead of a park.
Hof Ter Linden has it all to find blossoms and flowers in Belgium! Depending on the time you visit this place, you will find wood anemones, snowdrops, celandine, cowslip, cherry blossoms, chestnut blossoms, buttercups and a LOT of rhododendrons.
Location: Drie Eikenstraat 5, 2650 Edegem
Blooming period: mid March – May
7. Cherry blossoms at Boniverlei – Edegem
Once a year around mid April this street, that is right around the corner of my parental house, turns completely pink with blossoms! It is a magnificent sight to see! Walking under the trees almost makes you feel as if you are somewhere in Japan! If you want to take pictures here, I advise to be early, because this is one of the busiest roads in Edegem and you don’t want cars in your photos or people staring too much!
Currently I am stalking my parents to check whether the blossoms are already in bloom! But I am sure somewhere in your own neighborhood, there is a street just like that!
Location: Boniverlei, 2650 Edegem
Blooming period: mid April
8. Tulip fields in Meerdonk, the ultimate spring in Belgium!
Yes, you read that right! There are tulip fields in Belgium! You can find the fields in Meerdonk, a cute village in the Waasland region near the Dutch border. How I found out? Last year I was looking for things to do in my own country and since I couldn’t go to the Netherlands anymore due to Covid-19, I was looking for “tulips in Belgium” in Google. The first thing that appeared was a news article of our public broadcasting company about tulips in Meerdonk! I did not have a car at my disposal at that time. But this year I had! So once I found out from a local the tulips were in bloom, I immediately went there!
Since it is situated in a polder area, it is the ideal place for Dutch farmers to grow tulips. The fields change from time to time, but most fields are situated at the Rode Moerpolder and the Koningskieldrechtpolder. The most ideal way to explore them is by bike! So just put your bikes on the car and go for a lovely bike trip in this area! I have been told that there are also tulip fields right across the Belgian-Dutch border.
Be aware that there are a lot of streets where it is not allowed to drive a car. Don’t annoy the local farmers by driving on these roads, park here and block their tractors. Also do not pick the flowers or step on them. Always be respectful while visiting these fields. After all these are someone’s livelihood! I removed the exact street locations since there are way too many people disrespecting these places. I asked the farmer for permission to step in his field and the tulips I am holding I got from him, since these were cut off by his crew.
Location: Rode Moerpolder and the Koningskieldrechtpolder, Meerdonk
Blooming period: April
9. Purple magic at Hallerbos – Halle
For only a few weeks in April the Hallerbos is at its best when the blue-purple carpet of bluebells appears! These beautiful flowers cover the forest’s grounds completely accompanied by white wood anemones. But the bluebells aren’t the only spring flowers you can discover here! Depending on when you go, there are also daffodils, primroses, celandine, wild garlic and cuckoo flowers to admire! The Hallerbos is situated about 20 kilometers south of Brussels. I try to go there every spring and it never disappoints!
Location: Hogebermweg, 1500 Halle
Blooming period: mid April – beginning of May
10. Japanese spring in Belgium at the Japanese Garden – Hasselt
We have a little piece of Japan here in Belgium, which is called the Japanese Garden! With its 2.5 hectares, it is the biggest Japanese garden of Europe. The best time to visit this place is during April, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom! I have to admire the gardeners here. They make sure not a single leaf or petal stays on the ground. They keep everything super neat. Make sure to book your ticket for a stroll around the garden. My favorite part was definitely the waterfall!
If you like to shoot photos without any disturbance, it is possible to book a shoot via their website. That is what I did and I absolutely loved having the garden all to myself! Book your tickets (6€) here.

11. Apple and cherry blossoms at Haspengouw
The province of Limburg and especially the region Haspengouw is famous for its fruit. So during spring this is the perfect place to find blossoms and flowers in Belgium! In April you will find a lot of blooming orchards here. They even have numerous blossom bike routes. I found some fantastic cherry and apple orchards along the Roman road that traverses Borgloon. It was fantastic to hike here and smell the blossoms! So grab that bike or rent one and choose a bike route here.
Location: Haspengouw, South Limburg
Blooming period: check the blossom meter to know which trees are blooming
12. Rhododendrons at De Borrekens Castle – Vorselaar
You all know how much I love castles, especially if they have flowers on their domain! In May De Borrekens castle’s moat is completely surrounded by rhododendrons! They make it hard to actually spot the castle (there is only one gap in the bushes where you can take photos), but they certainly make it all the more beautiful! Make sure to take a walk in the woods around the domain!
Location: Vispluk 3, 2290 Vorselaar
Blooming period: May
13. Bulb flowers at Floralia Brussels – Castle Groot-Bijgaarden
If you are looking for some sort of “Keukenhof experience”in Belgium during spring, you should definitely go to Floralia Brussels at the castle of Groot-Bijgaarden! Every year in April the castle’s park turns into a real flower exposition with basically all existing spring bulb flowers! Most flowers are tulips, with almost 400 varieties, but also hyacinths and daffodils can be admired here! Over one million flowers are planted in the park.
I visited the park mid April in the morning and it was not too crowded, so it was easy to take beautiful photos. You can book your ticket (14€) here.

Also in Ghent Floralia are organized every four years, but due to Covid-19 it was cancelled last year. So they currently changed the concept into the Green Six Days. Which is a mix of digital and offline floral attractions.
15. Cherry blossoms at Vrijbroekpark – Mechelen
This beautiful park with a surface of over 50 hectares is situated at the border of the city center of Mechelen and a must visit during spring! Not only can you find dreamy fish ponds, a rose garden, a dahlia garden and a ecotope garden, there are also two pink blossom tree tunnels. These are each situated by the water and form a true fairytale decor.
I visited the park during a spring evening and beside a few runners and fishermen, it was extremely calm. Which made it all the more pleasant to explore the park and truly enjoy the views. I think this park will also look great during the summertime when all the flower gardens are in bloom! So I will surely return!
Location: Ridder Dessainlaan 65, 2800 Mechelen
Blooming period: mid – end of April
16. Tulips & blossoms at Alden Biesen – Bilzen
After reading in an article of Feeling Magazine that the Grand Commandery of Alden Biesen not only houses a castle, but also a boardwalk leading through blossom trees, I knew I had to go there! I was already planning on returning to the Haspengouw region, since the trees were blooming according to the blossom meter, so I decided to combine the two. On the last day of April I drove to the castle domain and I was in awe. The castle looks gorgeous and is surrounded by orchards. But it also has a beautiful French garden with tulips. A 4 km walk also starts here leading you to various orchards and beautiful views of the surroundings. I spent a lot of time here to take photos and to enjoy all the beauty this place has to offer!
Location: Kasteelstraat 6, 3740 Bilzen
Blooming period: second half of April
17. Cherry blossoms & rapeseed field on the Margijs walk – Neerijse
In the province of Flemish Brabant, between Brussels and Leuven, you’ll find the small town Neerijse. Just like many Belgian towns also this one has a castle, which is the starting point of a very nice 8 km walk. This hike is especially beautiful during spring, because then the streets leading to the castle turn into pink tunnels thanks to the blossom trees. The hike is very varied. Along the way you’ll encounter a huge pond packed with frogs (Doode Bemde), meadows, rivers, forests and I even encountered a rapeseed field! If you are lucky you also spot some bluebells at the Margijs forest.
Location: starting point: Lindenhoflaan 3, 3040 Neerijse

18. Tropical spring vibes at the Botanic Garden – Meise
In Meise you can find one of the biggest botanical gardens in the world! It is a huge garden surrounding the castle of Bouchout. I had expected more flowers and blossoms in the park itself. But the real highlight of this garden is the world’s biggest greenhouse; the Plant Palace! Once you enter the greenhouse it is as if you enter a different world. Welcome to the jungle! It is very humid and warm inside so the tropical plants can grow. Here you will find a wide variety of flowers and plants. Don’t forget to walk up the stairs so you can walk through the palm trees!
Location: Nieuwelaan 38, 1860 Meise
Blooming period: open all year, check their website
19. Rapeseed fields, a yellow spring in Belgium
Last year I was desperately looking for a rapeseed field, but I never found it during spring. I encountered one in September though (apparently there are two kinds, summer and winter)! But now I see them more and more all over Belgium! So if you are driving around the country side, keep your eyes open, because chances are you will find one! I already found several along highways, but also during a walk! So make it your spring mission to discover a rapeseed field in your neighborhood!
Location: spread all over Belgium
Blooming period: April-May
20. Wisteria & lilac at the beguinage of Mechelen
On a sunny warm evening I decided to drive to the beguinage of Mechelen. I had seen on Instagram the wisteria was blooming there, so I couldn’t wait to see and smell it! As soon as I wandered through the streets of the beguinage I discovered Mechelen is a true wisteria paradise! Every time I turned around a corner I found some more wisteria. The city of Mechelen really encouraged its inhabitants to create tile gardens to make the city greener and I absolutely love it! The most beautiful street I found was the Acht-Zalighedenstraat. Here I found plenty of wisteria and lilac and the scents in this street were amazing! This was the perfect street to experience spring! Just be respectful and keep it quiet since people are living here.

21. A wisteria spring in Belgium at the botanical garden of Leuven
In Leuven you find the oldest botanical garden of Belgium. The university of Leuven created this garden in 1738 for its students of medicine. The garden is over 2 hectares big and showcases a wide variety of trees, bushes, plants, flowers and herbs. But what I truly loved about this place is that it turns into one of the most beautiful places during spring in Belgium! Why? Well it turns into a true wisteria paradise! Imagine walking on a path decorated with flowers and wisteria on both sides! Bees flying around indulging in the nectar of the purple flowers and the scent, the true fragrance of spring, floating through the warm air…
And the best thing is that it is free to visit! It is a park which is open daily from 8.00 till 20.00 (Sunday from 9.00)
Location: Kapucijnenvoer 30, 3000 Leuven
Blooming period: May
22. Poppy fields in Flanders
Even though poppy fields are quite rare to find in Belgium, they are popping up (pun intended 🙂 ) more frequently lately! I do not think you can find them in the same place every year, so I am not going to share an exact location. But I know in the provinces of West Flanders and Flemish Brabant there are quite some poppy fields to discover! I was lucky to find one only 16 km from my home, simply by searching for “klaprozen” (poppies) in the Instagram hashtags. Then I just kept scrolling through the recent photos until I found one in the neighborhood. It only took me 5 minutes. If I can do it, you can too! I also recommend just taking a bike and ride it in more rural areas or go hiking. I am sure you will stumble upon a flower field!
Location: rural areas in Belgium
Blooming period: June
23. Royal Greenhouses of Laeken
The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken are open to the public for three weeks every spring. It is a fantastic chance to wander around the gardens of Belgium’s royal family, to admire Alphonse Balat’s (Victor Horta’s tutor) beautiful architecture and the wide variety of plants and flowers in the impressive greenhouses. Each greenhouse has a unique concept as well as a unique assortment of trees and plants. There is a fixed route, so you cannot roam freely within the greenhouses and the gardens due to safety reasons. Places are limited so you have to be quick to make a reservation for a visit.
Location: Av. du Parc Royal, 1020 Bruxelles
Period: Mid April – beginning of May
24. Daffodil hike – Rocherath
In April the valley of the Holzwarche river colors completely yellow with daffodils. I haven’t been able to visit it myself yet. (Not sure if I will make it there this year, since they probably finished blooming already) But it is definitely on my bucket list! Photographer Glenn Vanderbeke did this hike though and he took some amazing photo’s. Check the hiking route and his photos here. (only in Dutch)
