If you would like to stay in an old palazzo in Firenze I definitely recommend Hotel Rosso 23. It is a modern hotel in the center of Florence, situated at the Piazza Santa Maria Novella, only 5 minutes away from the famous Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (or the Duomo). It has a fresh and very clean look and offers 42 rooms.
Stay in an old palazzo in Firenze: Hotel Rosso 23
I stayed at a Superior View Room which offered me a giant room (in hotel terms) of around 18m². The room offered space for 3 persons ( a double and a twin bed), a TV, a desk, a fireplace with 2 comfortable chairs and a spacious bathroom with a walk in shower. The view on the Piazza Santa Maria Novella was fantastic!
The hotel offers free wifi which works in the entire hotel (their website states it’s charged, but it is not) and breakfast.
Pros
- The view on the Piazza Santa Maria Novella: amazing!
- The double bed had a separate mattress so you can’t feel the other person move around.
- You get 2 pillows per person which is great because in Italy pillows are always very flat.
- The hotel has an elevator so you don’t have to carry your suitcases upstairs. (rare in an Italian palazzo)
- Real towels! Not the linen like towels you often get in Italy that don’t really dry off.
- A lot of plugs to load your cameras and phones.
- Airconditioning
- The location: only a few minutes from the Firenze highlights such as the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria,…
- Next to it was a great restaurant!
Cons
- The shower had curtains. I hate shower curtains, because they are not very hygienic and usually too short. So when I took a shower, the bathroom got a little wet.
- Wifi didn’t always work.
- Breakfast was varied but in Italy often too sweet. The croissaints were all sweetened. The cake was good though! And I missed eggs.
- The toilet had 2 buttons, only 1 worked.
Overall I had a pleasant time during my 3 night stay at Hotel Rosso 23. The staff was friendly and the room was great. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Book your stay at an old palazzo in Firenze here.
