Traveling by train to move from city to city can be the perfect way to explore, depending of your destination and what you wish to see.
It’s cheaper; hiring a car can be expensive depending of the timing of traveling, the number of travel companions and the destination. You have to pay for gas, insurance, parking space and sometimes toll too. If you book your train seats early, prices are very affordable.
It’s faster; no traffic jams!
It’s relaxing; you can read a book, enjoy the scenery or eat something. You don’t have to be stressed out about finding the right direction or parking space or go crazy because of the traffic.
Last year I did a train trip through the North of Italy. I flew to Venice. From there I took the train to Verona and then I moved further to Florence. It was great doing three citytrips in a row! I saw and did so much and I loved it! It’s very easy and affordable to book trains online via the Trenitalia website. Train stations are often well located and you can always find hotels nearby so you don’t have to drag that suitcase all the way to the other side of town. (read more about Venice, Verona or Florence)
I also went to Malaga, Spain from where I did trips by train to Sevilla and Ronda. (Granada was easier by bus) The Renfe website is more difficult to reserve your seats, but I managed to do it eventually after more than an hour. (The system acts weird and they ask for codes of which I wasn’t sure what they meant, it’s not very user friendly) I preferred booking my seats in advance, because I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t want to take the risk that the trains would be complete or very expensive like the Thalys or EuroStar, which you always have to book in advance. But apparently booking your ticket the same day at the train station would’ve been just fine as well. (read more about Malaga, Sevilla, Ronda or Granada)
If you want to hop from city to city I advise you to take the train rather than renting a car!
