Thjófafoss is a waterfall in the Southeast of Iceland that I never encountered in any travel guide. So how did I find it? Those who read my e-book “How to plan your trip“ know that I use a certain app to plan all my trips and itineraries. This app (I keep it a secret only shared with those who read my e-book 🙂 ) shows all waterfalls, places of interest, hiking routes,… everything that I find interesting to discover while traveling. While creating a route with the app I encountered the waterfall icon on the way to Haifoss. I looked up its name Thjófafoss in Google et voila! I was sold by the beautiful pictures I found online and decided to add it to the itinerary.
Where to find the hidden waterfall in Southwest Iceland (Thjófafoss)
The hidden waterfall isn’t exactly easy to reach. Without a detailed GPS app you will not find it (at least my Icelandic GPS didn’t know the place). Fill up your gas tank at the OB gas station at the crossing of road 1 and 26 to make sure you have enough gas. After driving 44 kilometers on road 26 to the north (probably on your way to Haifoss) you will see a dirt road on your left and the Búrfell mountain. Take this side road (only if you have a 4×4 by the way!) and follow it for about 4 kilometers.
It is a long ride since you can’t drive faster than about 15 km per hour due to the bad road condition of the side road. You’ll be driving through lava rocks, sand and will encounter a lot of holes! This bumpy ride is worth it though, so don’t give up! I almost did because I thought I was wrong and the road seemed to get worse. But when I took the app to locate Thjófafoss I discovered I was almost there and continued (I swear that app is amazing!).
At a certain point the road seems a bit wider and you can park your car. Then you can just get out of the car, take your camera and walk to the sound of rushing water on your right hand side (you never see the river from the car on your way). You will find yourself at the edge of a steep cliff with the amazing sight of the Thjófafoss waterfall!

Kudos to your exploring skills; Don’t know when I will visit Iceland, but will visit this place for sure 😀. I remember you also shared the video while taking the walk towards waterfall from car park 🙂.
