When I am doing a city trip, I always prefer to stay in the city center near the main attractions and places to eat. That way I don’t loose any time on transport. Places with a dreamy rooftop, an extensive breakfast or a nice room view always attract me more. So if you are wondering where to stay in Lisbon, look no further; The exquisite Lumiares Hotel & Spa has all of the above!
Where to stay in Lisbon? Checking in at The Lumiares Hotel & Spa
The Arrival
When I arrived at the hotel, I immediately fell in love with its clean stylish look. I loved the shiny black and white tiles on the floor and the seating area with beautiful carpets on the wall. It looked as if I stepped into a picture of an interior magazine or a movie scene.
Behind the golden reception desk I got welcomed by a smiling and friendly receptionist (even though I arrived in the middle of the night). He really took the time to explain everything about the hotel and I received a voucher for a welcome drink at the rooftop bar Lumi.
Where to stay in Lisbon: an apartment in a hotel!
Then I got escorted to my lovely apartment, which consisted of three main areas; the kitchen and living room, the bathroom and the bedroom. The Lumiares doesn’t have rooms, but studios, apartments and lofts.
The walls of the living area are white, which gives the apartment a light clean look, but the furniture and decorations are warm and colorful. Except for the super white sleek shiny kitchen, which I loved!
The kitchen is equipped with everything you need, so it is perfectly possible to cook your own meals, if you are on a tight budget or simply want a quiet night in. The refrigerator was filled with sodas, bottles of water and even a complimentary bottle of wine! On the kitchen counter I got welcomed by 4 pasteis de nata (Portuguese egg tart pastries dusted with cinnamon), which were super delicious!
I slept in the blue room, next to pink, my favorite color. The bed was very comfy and had the perfect pillows, which is always hard to find in hotels. I often struggle with pillows that are too flat, but too thick to sleep with two. The pillows at the Lumiares were just perfect! So I slept very well.
Even though the hotel is located in Bairro Alto, the bustling night life area, I never heard anything from the outside thanks to the soundproof windows. The separate bedroom also makes it perfectly possible to go to sleep whenever you want, if you are traveling with someone who wants to keep watching TV or read a book in the living room.
The bathroom was decorated with beautiful white blue tiles and was spacious. The only thing I never understand are showers without a screen, which always turns the bathroom floor into a pool. 🙂
Breakfast
Breakfast gets served at Lumi, the rooftop bar and restaurant. There is an extensive breakfast buffet, but you can also choose an à la carte dish like pancakes if you prefer those. I loved having breakfast outside in the warm morning sun enjoying the stunning view of the rooftops of Lisbon.
The Hotel
Besides breakfast you can also enjoy drinks, lunch or dinner at Lumi. I loved the welcome drink called Lumi Porto Sour, which was a mix of Port wine, pineapple and lime juice. Downstairs you can also find Mercado Café serving delicious and contemporary Portuguese food.
Next to the reception you can find a spa and gym where you can find wellness and beauty treatments. The gym is open 24/7. I regret not being able to test these out, because I had only one day there (the next day I went to Sintra, so I had to leave at 7.30).
The Location
When I ask myself where to stay in Lisbon, I always think about how to avoid too much climbing and being near restaurants and sigths to see. That is why I think The Lumiares is the ideal hotel!
It is located opposite from the Ascensor da Gloria. Which makes it easy to move from Bairro Alto to Restauradores, the square that leads to the main shopping area and Rossio station. The hotel is also located at walking distance from several Lisbon sights:
- Ascensor da Bica: 11 minutes
- Carmo Convent: 7 minutes
- Praça do Comercio: 14 minutes
- Elevador de Santa Justa: 10 minutes
- Castelo de Sao Jorge: 32 minutes
Bairro Alto itself is a very colorful and vibrant neighborhood with a lot of bars and restaurants, perfect to spend your evenings.
